How to pack for a week-long trip

How to pack for a week-long trip: exact clothing quantities, a day-by-day planning method, bag choice and a checklist that fits a cabin bag or a small suitcase.

By TravelGearly Editorial TeamUpdated

Quick answer

For a 7-day trip, plan outfits day by day, then pack 4–5 tops, 2–3 bottoms, one layer, 5–7 sets of innerwear and socks, one pair of walking shoes plus sandals, and a toiletry kit. Add weather- and activity-specific items for your destination. Most people can fit this in a 35–45 L backpack or a cabin trolley.

A week is long enough that you can’t pack every option, and short enough that you shouldn’t need a big suitcase. Here’s how to pack for a week-long trip without overthinking it.

For a checklist tuned to your destination and season, use the packing list generator.

Step 1: Plan by day, not by outfit

Write down each day and what you’ll do: travel, beach, sightseeing, dinner, meeting. You’ll quickly see which clothes you actually need.

Step 2: Use these quantities

Item 7-day quantity
Tops / T-shirts 4–5
Bottoms 2–3
Dressier outfit 1
Layer (fleece, jacket, shrug) 1
Innerwear 5–7
Socks 5–7 pairs
Sleepwear 1–2
Shoes Walking shoes + sandals
Swimwear 1–2 if needed

Pick two or three colours so everything matches. Plan one small wash midweek if you want to go carry-on only.

Step 3: Add weather and activity items

  • Hot or beach: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, sandals. See our Goa packing list.
  • Cold: thermals, fleece, jacket, gloves. See our Manali packing list.
  • Monsoon: rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, waterproof pouch.
  • Business: formal outfit, laptop, chargers.

Step 4: Pick the bag

A 35–45 L travel backpack or a cabin trolley fits a week of warm-weather clothes. For winter trips or families, a medium check-in suitcase is easier.

Step 5: Pack with cubes

Use packing cubes: one for tops, one for bottoms, one small cube for innerwear and socks, and a bag for shoes. See how to organize a carry-on.

Step 6: Weigh it

Check the total in the luggage weight calculator before you leave — especially for flights with 7 kg cabin limits.

Frequently asked questions

How many outfits should I pack for 7 days?

Plan 7 outfits but build them from 4–5 tops and 2–3 bottoms that mix and match. You'll re-wear bottoms and at least one or two tops.

Can I fit a week of clothes in a carry-on?

Yes, for most warm-weather trips. Use packing cubes, wear your bulkiest items on the journey and keep toiletries small. Cold-weather trips may need a checked bag for bulky layers.
