How to pack light: a carry-on-only method that works
How to pack light for any trip: the 5-day rule, a capsule wardrobe, what to wear on travel day, toiletry swaps and a simple way to decide what stays home.

Quick answer
To pack light, pack for five days no matter how long the trip and plan one wash; choose a capsule wardrobe in two or three colours so everything matches; wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket while travelling; decant toiletries into small containers; and remove anything you packed 'just in case' but didn't use on your last trip.
Packing light isn’t about owning special gear. It’s a handful of decisions that, together, fit a week into a cabin bag. Here’s how to pack light using a method that works for most trips from India.
1. Pack for five days, whatever the trip length
After five days, you’re repeating clothes or doing laundry either way. Pack for five, plan a wash, and a 12-day trip fits the same bag as a 5-day one. Hotels, homestays and laundromats make this easy in most places.
2. Build a capsule wardrobe
Choose two or three colours that go together and make every top work with every bottom.
| Item | Quantity (5 days) |
|---|---|
| Tops | 4–5 |
| Bottoms | 2 (wear one) |
| Layer | 1 (wear it) |
| Innerwear & socks | 5 |
| Sleepwear | 1 |
| Shoes | 1 pair (wear them) + sandals |
| Swimwear (if needed) | 1 |
Quick-dry fabrics make washing in a sink realistic.
3. Wear the heavy things
Wear your bulkiest shoes, jeans and jacket on travel days. That alone can move 1.5–2 kg out of your bag.
4. Shrink the toiletries
- Decant into 50–100 ml bottles — also required for cabin liquids.
- Switch to solids: shampoo bars, stick sunscreen, solid deodorant.
- Skip what your hotel provides.
- Keep a toiletry kit permanently packed. See travel essentials kit.
5. Use packing cubes
Packing cubes don’t create space, but they make a small bag work: one cube for tops, one for bottoms, a small one for innerwear. Compression cubes help with winter layers.
6. Cut the “just in case” items
Before you zip up, take out anything you packed “just in case” that you didn’t use on your last trip. Most things can be bought at your destination.
7. Weigh before you go
Many Indian domestic economy fares allow around 7 kg in the cabin, but check yours. Use the luggage weight calculator to see where the weight is going.
The right bag
A 35–45 L backpack or a cabin trolley is the target. See how to choose a travel backpack.
