How this travel essentials checklist works

Most packing lists are written for an average trip that doesn't exist. This tool starts from your answers instead. It knows, for example, that Manali in January means snow and sub-zero nights, that Goa in July means monsoon rain, and that Ladakh needs sun protection and warm layers at the same time.

• Destination and month set the weather and terrain — beach, hills, high altitude, desert or city.
• Trip length sets clothing quantities. Beyond a week we assume one wash, so your bag doesn't grow with every extra day.
• Transport adds items like a chain lock for trains, a clear liquids bag for flights or a car charger for road trips. Only the ways of travelling that actually reach your destination are offered, and indirect routes add an onward-transfer reminder.
• Travellers adds kids' and baby sections when you need them.
• Gear budget only affects the product suggestions, never your checklist.

If your destination isn't in our data yet, the tool asks two extra questions — whether the trip is international and what weather to expect — and builds your list from those. Visiting several countries? Choose “Visiting several countries?” in the first step: the list combines each country’s weather, plug types, voltage and currencies, and links to the entry checks for every country on your route.
